Vagueness as Closeness

چکیده

In this paper I present and defend a definition of vagueness, and draw out some consequences of accepting this definition. §1 asks what we should properly expect of a definition of vagueness, and §2 reviews existing definitions. §3 explains a key background notion necessary to an understanding of the definition to be presented here. §4 presents this definition, and §5 explains its advantages. §6 draws out the consequences of accepting this definition for the project of offering a substantive theory of vagueness, and §7 considers and rejects some variations on the definition offered here.

Cristina Coppola Distances and Closeness Measures in Information Spaces

The notion of metric space plays a basic role in several researches addressed to process information. Indeed the objects we will investigate are represented by points and the distance is a measure of " dissimilarity " between objects. Now, the question that arises is if such a notion is the better one in a context in which we are not able to obtain complete information about the considered obje...

Identifying sustainability communicators in urban regeneration: Integrating individual and relational attributes

The paper advances a conceptualization of sustainability in urban regeneration as communicative practice taking place within networks of social actors. To demonstrate the potential of this perspective, we propose an interdisciplinary methodology integrating social network analysis from sociology and multi-criteria decision analysis (fuzzy logic) from operations research to calculate a sustainab...

Sorites without Vagueness I: Classificatory Sorites

An abstract mathematical theory is presented for a common variety of soritical arguments, treated here in terms of responses of a system, say, a biological organism, a gadget, or a set of normative linguistic rules, to stimuli. Any characteristic of the system’s responses which supervenes on stimuli is called a stimulus effect upon the system. Classificatory sorites is about the identity of or ...

A Method for Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multi- Attribute Decision Making with Incomplete Attribute Weight Information

A new method for solving intuitionistic fuzzy multi-attribute decision making problem is proposed, in which the information of attribute weights is incompletely known. Considering much information about hesitancy and vagueness inherited to intuitionistic fuzzy sets, a new class of distance for describing the deviation degrees between intuitionistic fuzzy sets is introduced. Furthermore, the mea...

A Qualitative Approach to Vague Spatio-Thematic Query Processing

In order to support the processing of spatial queries, spatial knowledge must be represented in a way that machines can make use of it. In ontology-based geographic information systems, a challenge thus is to enhance thematic knowledge with spatial knowledge. A way to achieve this is to combine existing approaches to spatial knowledge representation with ontologies. In this paper an implementat...
